Description of Program:

The Special Education Program and the School Psychology Program within Lehigh University’s College of Education are collaborating on the Center for Evidenced Based Practice: Young Children with Challenging Behaviors, Kids in Development Study. The Lehigh University Research Site is focusing on enrolling children with early childhood behavioral disorders including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

The Special Education program offers graduate studies to those who seek (a) teaching certification in mentally and physically handicapped and (b) advanced graduate degrees in Special education (e.g., Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy). The graduate program is fully accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and offers special education certification at the Master's level.

The School Psychology Program offers both Ph.D. and Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degrees in School Psychology. Students completing the Ph.D. doctoral program must attain a dual set of competencies and emerge as capable researchers as well as skilled practitioners. The primary objective of the Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program is to train individuals who wish to become school-based practitioners.

Mission Statement:

The Special Education Program is strongly committed to the preparation of highly qualified educators who are not only skilled practitioners and/or researchers but are leaders in establishing effective teaching and learning environments for individuals with disabilities in their school and community. The philosophy that underlies the program's curriculum and the activities of the program's faculty include a person-centered approach, cross-categorical training, assessment-based practices, experiential learning, and innovation in research and practice. The Special Education program is also committed to the education and inclusion of all individuals with disabilities in school and society.

The School Psychology program recognizes the importance, value, and necessity for its students and faculty to maintain knowledge of the ways in which culture and language can impact the lives of students. Efforts to develop competencies in students entering the field of school psychology are woven throughout the entire curriculum. The program demonstrates this through its research, professional development, mentoring, and community involvement.

Lehigh University’s Special Education Program and School Psychology Program are also collaborating on Project Achieve, a five-year research study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
