Description
of Program
The
Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute at the University
of South Florida is serving as both a Kids in Development Study
Research Site and as Central Office for the study. The research
team will be working closely with the Center for Autism and
Related Disabilities and the Early Intervention Positive Behavior
Support program, both a part of the Department of Child and
Family Studies at the Institute, in addition to Head Start/Early
Start of Hillsborough County. The USF site will be focusing
on studying families of children with Autism, children with
developmental delays, and children from multi-risk families
and communities.
The
Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute was created
over 25 years ago by the Florida Legislature to expand our
knowledge
about how best to serve the mental health needs of Florida's
citizen. The Institute uses applied research techniques to
understand practical
problems, and develop and disseminate state-of-the-art technology
and knowledge to improve human services. The Institute seeks
to
increase Americans' awareness of issues in mental health and
improve the formulation and implementation of public policy.
The Department
of Child & Family Studies (CFS) is one of four departments
within the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute,
a college of the University of South Florida. The University
of South Florida KIDS Research Site is a part of the Division
of
Applied Research and Education Support within The Department
of Child and Family Studies. Glen Dunlap is the Director
of DARES.
There are
many Projects and initiatives within the Division of Applied
Research
and Education Support including; the Center for Autism and Related
Disorder (CARD), Early Intervention Positive Behavior Support,
and The Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters
(HIPPY)
program, a home-based, early intervention/school readiness program.
Mission
Statement:
To promote the development, mental health, and well-being
of children and families in their communities in Florida and nationally.
1. Promote the development of new knowledge and innovative
practices through research.
2. Promote the effective application of best practices in communities
and agencies through education, training, dissemination, consultation,
evaluation, advocacy, and collaboration.
3. Promote and demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding
of the cultural, economic, and social diversity of our society
through the manner in which we conduct our work and the outcomes
of that work.
4. Promote accountability and improvement of services through
supporting and influencing local, state, and federal policy-making
bodies, funding agencies, communities and neighborhoods, and
other organizations that support individuals and families.
Our
Values:
Values are those beliefs essential to reaching the vision,
mission and the purpose of the mission. They are few in number
and part of the fundamental way of doing things. Our beliefs
are demonstrated by the respectful and professional ways in
which we conduct research, our efforts at teaching, training,
and sharing information, and our partnerships with the individuals
and families that we serve.
We believe that:
1. Our mission can best be accomplished in
a professional and supportive environment that relies on the
contribution of every member of the department and that values
the diversity of individuals in the department and multi disciplinary
approaches that result from their collaboration.
2. Families and communities are the foundation for the well-being
of their members and of society as a whole.
3. Services should be provided in an effective manner and in
the most normal environment possible.
4. All services and supports should be provided in an individualized
manner that is sensitive to the diversity of developmental,
social, economic, cultural, and familial circumstances.
5. We should pursue the active participation of constituents
in development of research, programs, policy, and the delivery
of services.
6. We should be accountable for our work and believe that it
should result in outcomes that are valued by our constituents.
